Amy was born in Limehouse and always claimed to be a cockney as this was within sound of Bow bells. She was the youngest of a family of four girls and a boy. Her father had recently left the sea and set up as a dealer and rope maker. His business prospered and Amy moved with his family first to Leytonstone then to Southend-on-Sea.

In Southend, Amy trained to be a shorthand typist, and then travelled daily to the city working for companies including the Mazawattee Tea Company and the LCC. She was a strong swimmer, earning medals for life-saving ability. She played the piano well and sang solos with the church choir and in concerts.

It was at such an occasion at the Pleasant Road Methodist chapel that Bert Mann fell in love with her. He was a widower twelve years older and was visiting with the Shoebury Methodist choir. His father’s building firm built a fine new house on the sea front in Thorpe Bay for Amy’s father. From there Amy, now 27, married Bert in 1926. They moved into a new house in Shoebury built for them by Bert and his father, who lived next door.

Three boys and a girl were born in Shoebury between 1928 and 1935 while Bert’s firm prospered. But the outbreak of war in 1939 ended the prosperous years. Her three boys, youngest only 8, were evacuated with the local school to Ashbourne in Derbyshire to be billeted with strangers. So Amy followed a few weeks later and rented rooms there for her and her children while her husband remained at home. She suffered migraine attacks from the stress.

In 1941 her two older boys moved up to Southend High School now located in Mansfield, Notts. So Amy moved to Ashtead in Surrey with her younger two, to be near her sisters Alice and Lena who had moved there to escape the London bombing. The sisters remained close and after the war Lena and Lily moved to Shoebury to live in the next road to Amy. I remember regular evenings at Lily's home to play solo whist with Percy and my father Bert while Amy and Lily (Aunty Bill as she was called) chatted and knitted by the fire.

Bert died in 1958 leaving all to Amy, still only 59. She was able to visit her relations in Canada, and for some years lived with her eldest son, a missionary, in Kenya. Often holidaying with her sister Lena, she corresponded with a large circle of friends. She remained active in the church, putting her shorthand typing to good use as circuit secretary for some years.

Amy died of cancer in 1987 aged 88. I remember her as a wonderful mother, always kind, patient, supportive and generous. As a child, cuts and tears were wiped away with the calm reassurance that everything will be all right. She was not noted for a tidy house or for punctuality! The large garden and even the house was our playground - and I was allowed to treat the kitchen as a chemistry laboratory. We were always late for church, causing maximum disturbance as four children tried to squeeze along a pew. Amy liked to play board and card games especially with her children and grandchildren and could play a good game of scrabble right to the end. Before she died, her family had grown to include twelve grandchildren and she loved having any, or preferably all, of them to her house.
